The ability to use imagination and envision future needs is crucial in art, design and architecture. This was the starting point for Studio Time: Future Thinking in Art and Design, a publication edited by Jan Boelen, Ils Huygens, and Heini Lehtinen, and published by Black Dog Press in 2018 .
The book serves as the closing chapter of Studio Future, one of the research studios developed by Z33 House for Contemporary Art. Since 2012, Studio Future had focused on various aspects of future-oriented art and design practices through research projects, exhibitions, and both online and offline publishing
Studio Time approaches the question of the future from three interconnected perspectives. The book is divided into three parts, each addressing a fundamental dimension of future thinking :
Future Fictions and Imagination in Creative Practices: How do artists, designers, and architects use narrative and speculation to envision what comes next?
Future Literacy: Understanding the temporal continuum in which future-oriented work is created, and being aware of the underlying incentives, motivations, and structures of self-initiated works or commissions .
Future Ethics: What are the responsibilities of creative practitioners when proposing new futures?
Each part consists of two essays, two practical reflective contributions from artists and designers, and a selection of art, design, and architecture projects from practitioners around the world.
Future thinking and making require imagination and the capability to create narratives for near and far futures, as well as the capacity to compose proposals to meet imagined future needs . At the same time, viewing or consuming speculative creative works requires some level of understanding of the context in which those works were created.
For Boelen, these questions are not merely academic. They are central to his broader practice as a curator and educator. If we cannot imagine different futures, we cannot build them. Studio Time is both a record of Z33’s research and a toolkit for anyone seeking to develop their own future literacy.
